Coffee came to Costa Rica the end of the eighteenth century. Slowly the demand for coffee growing expanded over Central Valley. An association of coffee farmers, both large and small, allowed Costa Rica to become the first Central American country to establish coffee as an industry.
The first export from Costa Rica was to Colombia in 1820. In 1823, Costa Rica coffee was exported to Chile. In 1854, coffee was exported directly to London. This led the way to exporting coffee from Costa Rica. The country was modernized. Many young Costa Ricans ventured to London where they were educated as doctors, business owners, and engineers which contributed to the improvement life styles of Costa Ricans.
The commercialization of coffee allowed Costa Rica to build the first access to the Atlantic in 1890. Years later, the inhabitants of the capital city of San José attended a memorial in tribute the first coffee farmers. The coffee industry paved the way for economic growth for Costa Rica.
